UFO Sightings - 1957 - The English Channel

On April 29th, 1957 an incident happened over the English Channel that was reported, then completely cleared by the RAF.
You decide....

Radar operators picked up two "objects" over the English Channel that as they reported, "aroused their curiosity".
It was so aroused that they launched several RAF Gloster Javelin Interceptors to go check it out.
The Javelin's closed but the targets bolted away from them and pretty much left them sitting.

The official RAF explanation....
They were two brand new Hawker Hunters on training maneuvers.

Problems with that story.....

1. Why were jets in British airspace and the Brits knew nothing about it?
Maybe they were top secret and it was a covert training exercise?
    Okay....that's possible right?

2. The top speed of a Gloster Javelin is 710 mph.
The top speed of a Hawker Hunter is 715 mph.
Five miles an hour is hardly enough of a difference to be able to leave another jet like that in your wake.

3. Ground observers saw two bright metallic objects.
Okay....still could have been planes with the sun reflecting off them.

4. The radar operations picked up and tracked the two objects on radar for 300 miles before the "jets" hit a burst of speed and disappeared off the scopes, an extra 100 miles, for a total of 400 miles...one way.
The Hawker Hunter had a 445 mile range.
So that meant the two Hunters crashed into the ocean, less than 45 miles out, after outrunning the Javelins.
Now...the Hunters could carry external fuel tanks that gave them a range of close to 2,000 miles.
But being weighted down like that should have cut into their "blinding speed".

So what were the Javelins chasing that day that they couldn’t even get close enough to get a visual on?
Experimental aircraft?
Russian fighters that snuck into British airspace?

Or something else?

UFO Sightings - Fun in the Skies of "Merrie Olde England"

England has had as many UFO sightings as anyone else in the world.
One report that intrigued me were the sightings of August 13th and 14th of 1956.

At Royal Air Force Station Bentwaters 80 miles North of London, their radar picked up an extremely fast moving object at about 10:00 PM.
An object estimated to be moving at around 10,000 miles per hour.
Yes.
Ten thousand miles per hour.
That would be around Mach 13.

And the UFO was at only 2,000 feet!It was so low that it flashed underneath a Douglas C-47 Skytrain military transport that was in the air.

If that wasn’t bad enough, at 11:00 PM, the whole show started again.

This time at RAF Lakenheath, 50 some odd miles Northeast of Bentwaters, a de Havilland DH 112 Venom was on a routine practice interception drill when they were alerted to a UFO in the area.
The UFO was confirmed on radar and the Venom saw it on radar as well and set a course to intercept.

de Havilland DH 112

Closing in, the pilot radioed that he had his guns locked on it when the UFO shot away.
Then suddenly, the UFO was behind the Venom.
According to ground radar the target circled behind the intercept.
The pilot tried for ten minutes to shake the UFO, but it easily matched every move.

The Venom was running low on gas so the pilot had no alternative but to head back to the base.
Interestingly, and as seems to be the case with a lot of UFOs, it followed him to within almost ten miles of the base and just stopped, hovering there.
A second Venom came into range at this point but oddly, developed engine problems as it closed in on the location and had to turn back.

The entire episode was watched from not one, but two different ground radar stations and the Venom’s own radar.

In 2008, the Discovery Channel show UFO Hunters had an epiosde called "Military vs. UFOs" that focused on RAF Bentwaters' 1956 and 1980 UFO incidents.
1980?
It happened again?
Yep...
Bentwaters is near the location of the infamous December 1980 UFO incident in Rendlesham Forest.

F-86D Sabre versus UFO over the UK!

UFO, Norwich, F-86D Sabre

Now this is an interesting article.....

US pilot ordered to shoot down UFO over Norwich
A FORMER fighter pilot has told how he was ordered to shoot down a UFO the size of an aircraft carrier over England 50 years ago.
The encounter over Norwich is detailed in one of 19 files declassified by Britain's Ministry of Defense and released by the National Archives yesterday.
RAF controllers told US pilot Milton Torres to "lock on" and launch all 24 of his rockets over the city, The Sun reports.

The official report is also listed at the released UFO files - October 2008
http://ufos.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
It's file DEFE 24/1931/1 on that page.

Shooting down a UFO (the size of an aircraft carrier no less) over a populated area?
The idea that a F-86D Sabre could shoot down a UFO of that size?
Something just doesn't add up here.

RAF radar chief: I saw UFO fleet

RAF radar chief: I saw UFO fleet

An RAF expert yesterday revealed how he tracked a whole fleet of “spaceships” on military radar — but the Ministry of Defence told him to keep quiet.
Wing Commander Alan Turner, 64, said colleagues sat stunned when 35 super-fast vessels appeared on their screens.
Wing Cmdr Turner, who was a chief operator of the RAF’s radar system for 29 years, said the craft were equally spaced and shot from 3,000ft to 60,000ft at almost 300mph.
Incredibly, every few seconds one of the UFOs would suddenly vanish from radar and be replaced by an identical vessel moments later.
