Tonight - Conspiracy Encyclopedia: The Encyclopedia Of Conspiracy Theories - Thom Burnett:
"Alien lizards (who secretly rule the world) got America to invade Iraq and grab all the oil.
Must be true, because it's in this book.
Often, we desperately want to believe a gigantic conspiracy is to blame for what's going on. Particularly if it fits in with our current political enthusiasms, religious faith, or social conditioning.
Rather unkindly, Thom Burnett, who wrote the introduction, notes that it is 'part of the conspiracy theorist's arsenal to have the ability to form links between apparently distinct pieces of information in a way known as cognitive mapping. Critics such as Frederic Jameson have described conspiracy theory as 'a poor person's cognitive mapping', implying it betrays the same lack of understanding that a poor person has of the workings of the international banking system.'
That's me. My ignorance of the said international banking system is total."
