America has since the Second World War attempted to sway public opinion of foreign nations in an effort to combat cold war propaganda distributed by world communist regimes. The objective was to win minds and hearts of the world for democracy, freedom, free market economies and defeat evil communism and authoritarian governments.
Propaganda legislation goals included its use as a powerful force and positive influence on American diplomatic activity around the world for years. We like to think propaganda is truth but by definition it involves lies, deceit, half truths, misinformation and exaggeration to control thoughts, beliefs and attitudes of others to influence world opinion.
Nazi Germany under Hitler was exposed to multiple levels of propaganda from educational systems to the press that effectively convinced the public their cause was just when they exterminated Jews and others they deemed inferior. The people were indoctrinated with a nationalistic fervor and loyalty to the motherland and Hitler that mandated blind obedience to authoritarian rule. Hitler thought he ruled by divine authority and so did Germany. 'And so I believe to-day that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator.
